DOD Directive 8570.1 Certification Training

Training is your first line of defense

Government agencies MUST protect and defend their information and information systems. Security intrusions Are rapidly rising. That's why the Department of Defense put DoD Directive 8570.1 in place. This enterprise-wide mandate requires that any personnel conducting Information Assurance (IA) functions should be trained and certified in a commercial certification on the concepts, principles, and applications to enhance protection of the Department of Defense's (DoD) information, information systems, and networks.

Directive 8570.1 in Brief

Defines two IA categories (technical, management); levels within categories (I, II, III); functions within levels

Identifies specific commercial certifications as baseline for each level (see certification list)

Requires all IA certifications be accredited under ISO/IEC Standard 17024

Requires continuous learning to maintain certification status (typically, 40 hours annually; 120 hours over 3 years)

Establishes DoD IA Certification Oversight Advisory Board under the DoD CIO/NII

Requires privileged user agreement outlining responsibilities, plus legal and policy limitations of their authority
